“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.”
1 Chronicles 16:34 NIV
Thanksgiving often prompts us to list the things for which we are thankful.
I do it too. So, for what it is worth, here are a few things that I am thankful for this year.
I am thankful for my favorite country foods – home-canned tomatoes, boiled okra, fried chicken gizzards and a cold glass of buttermilk. Yes, I do eat (and enjoy!) these things.
I am thankful for traffic jams, so I can bless the people who have bumper stickers that read ‘honk if you love Jesus’, although their language doesn’t always return the blessing.
I am thankful God gave me a sense of humor that lets me leave a candy bar on my seat at church with a note to janitor saying, ‘thanks for cleaning the church.’
I am thankful for the memories of my dad who, when I was a child, reminded me often that he would die for the three people he loved the most: me, my mom and Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke.
I am thankful for the memories of my mom who never failed to ask in front of my friends as we were leaving if I was wearing clean underwear, just in case we had an accident.
I am thankful for my grandchildren who have taught me to appreciate spoons because, in their words, it is hard to eat cereal with a fork.
And I am thankful for tears, so I can cry when the captain on the plane tells us a soldier’s mortal remains are aboard.
I am thankful for my wife and family that love me.
I am thankful for Jesus who saved me.
And I am thankful for you, for allowing me to speak into your life.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
