Hearing from God
But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.” Luke 1:30 (NIV)
Were you ever chosen for something you did not think you were worthy to receive? Maybe you were surprised with a special award or recognition. You were minding your own business when you learned you were chosen as the MVP, or the employee of the month. Whatever it was, you did not feel worthy. Perhaps this happens to other people, but not to you.
Mary felt this way when Gabriel appeared to her. The angel announced that she would be the long-awaited Messiah’s mother. No one had heard from God in over 400 years. Yet here was an actual angel in her residence, informing her that God was pleased with her!
Gabriel is not likely to give us a message, but we can learn much about hearing from God through Mary’s example. Mary was a humble servant of the Lord. In order to hear from God, our hearts must be in the right place.
First, we can spend time in prayer and Bible study. We hear more when we listen. Second, we can put what we read into practice. God was pleased with Mary’s life. He gave her a special honor that she did not expect.
Seek God. Have faith that He will answer. Be willing to accept His answer, whatever it may be. Sometimes God answers in wonderfully unexpected ways.
Lord, help me have faith to trust you in all circumstances. Mold my thoughts and desires so they look like your thoughts and desires.
